Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only).” [al-Kawthar 108:2]
Say (O Muhammad): ‘Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists).” [al-An’am 6:162]
And for every nation We have appointed religious ceremonies, that they may mention the Name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He has given them for food. And your God is One God, so you must submit to Him Alone (in Islam)” [al-Hajj 22:34]
Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you.” [The Noble Qur’an, 22:37]

Qurbani is the practice of sacrificing an animal for Allah (swt). Each year, during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah; on the days of Eid al-Adha (from 10th to 13th of Dhul Hijjah), Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal to mark the completion of Hajj.
This Qurbani or sacrifice honours the unwavering faith and submission of the Prophet Ibrahim (as), who was prepared to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (as) after seeing a dream that Allah wanted him to do so. However, the dream was simply a test from Allah, and He sent down a ram from heaven to be sacrificed in Isma’il’s (as) place instead.
This is the significance of Eid-Al-Adha and the Qurbani. This is why muslims offer a Qurbani each year to mark this spirit of sacrifice for Allah and submission to his will.
There are two schools of thoughts on the matter. According to the Hanafi sect of Islam, offering Qurbani on Eid-Al-Adha is compulsory. Whilst for the Shafi sect it is Sunnah to make a sacrifice or Qurbani on Eid-Al-Adha.
The following people in the said circumstances are exempt from Qurbani:
- people who are not mentally stable
- people who have not yet reached and attained puberty
- people who are travelling and are away from home (approx 40-45 KM)
- and people who do not possess 52.5 tolas of silver, or equalling wealth.
The animals that can be slaughtered for Qurbani are goats, cows or camels.
- The camel must be older than 6 years.
- If it is a cow, it must be older than 3 years and
- If it is a goat, it must be older than 2 years.
The animal should not be blind, sick, injured, have a limp, undernourished or extremely weak.
- A Muslim
- A free person
- A non-traveller (Muqeem)
- A person in possession of the nisab amount (being rich enough to give Sadaqah al-Fitr)
After the sacrifice is made on Eid-Al-Adha; Islamically the animal is split into three equal shares—one share is for the donor, one for the donor’s extended family and friends and one share for the people in need.
When a believing servant of Allah makes a Qurbani donation to a charity; with the intention of feeding those in need; we make it a point that your donation (in full) reaches those in need; in the form of fresh meat.
The Eid-Al-Adha Qurbani requires you to sacrifice an animal—a goat, sheep, cow or camel, during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. Once the animal is sacrificed, we at Raza Foundation ensure that the Qurbani meat is distributed fairly to the vulnerable communities in need. When we say vulnerable communities in need; we speak of those people who live in poverty. Communities for whom eating meat is a luxury.
When you donate your Qurbani with us; you can be sure that we have adhered to the Islamic principles and the sacrifice is carried out in accordance with Islamic regulations.
